The human research that exists looks at diagnosed anxiety disorders in a clinical setting, in a small number of studies from one research tradition. That is a long way from the nootropic pitch it is usually sold with, and it is not enough to describe its safety over time.

Synthetic heptapeptide studied for anxiety disorders in a small, geographically concentrated human literature. No UK marketing authorisation was identified, and everyday cognition or focus claims are not established.

How well studied

Tier Guide: A = Well studied, B = Some good studies, C = Early evidence & D = Barely studied

CHow well studiedEarly evidence

Mostly animal studies or very small early trials in humans. We don't really know yet how it behaves in people.

UK status

How you could legitimately come across it here, if at all

UK statusNo authorised UK product

No authorised UK medicine contains this, and we have no record of a routine UK clinic route. Material sold online is unregulated.

Evidence strength and UK regulatory status answer different questions.

Heightened caution: this compound carries unresolved regulatory, safety or supply-chain concerns in the UK. Nothing here is a recommendation to use it.

Overview

How it works

Thought to act on the brain systems involved in anxiety, partly by slowing the breakdown of the body's own enkephalin peptides, and by influencing GABA-related and monoamine signalling. Most of this comes from lab and animal work.

Tuftsin-derived heptapeptide reported to inhibit enkephalin-degrading enzymes in human blood and to modulate GABAergic and monoaminergic signalling in preclinical models. Human work is limited to small anxiety-disorder studies.

Reported benefits

  • Small human studies in generalised anxiety disorder and neurasthenia report symptom improvement, including a comparison against a benzodiazepine
  • Those studies are small, predominantly Russian, and have not been independently replicated to modern standards
  • Everyday nootropic, focus, cognition or wellness effects are not established by the catalogued human record

Who it's typically used for

Research interest in anxiety disorders only. Nothing in the catalogued record supports use by healthy people for focus or general wellbeing.

Timeline to results

The small anxiety-disorder studies ran over a matter of weeks. No validated timeline exists for any other use.

Safety & UK access

Dosage

No established human dose

No established human self-administration dose. The anxiety-disorder studies used clinic-administered regimens in diagnosed patients that have not been independently validated, and there is no UK-authorised product with instructions behind it.

Side effects

  • Long-term safety and risk in humansinsufficient human data; absence of published harm is not the same as evidence of safety
  • Immunogenicity from aggregation and peptide-related impurities, raised by the FDA for compounded peptides of this kindregulatory concern
  • Effects reported in the small anxiety-disorder studiesreported; not independently verified outside that literature
  • Purity and contents of unregulated online materialunverified

Getting it in the UK

UK statusNo authorised UK product

No authorised UK medicine contains this, and we have no record of a routine UK clinic route. Material sold online is unregulated.

Where it turns up

  • Not routinely available in the UK
  • Unregulated online market

No UK marketing authorisation for Selank was identified in this audit. It is registered in Russia, which has no bearing on UK legality or availability. The US FDA has separately reviewed peptides of this kind as bulk drug substances for compounding and raised concerns about immunogenicity from aggregation and peptide-related impurities, together with inadequate human safety information. That is a US regulatory position, not UK law, and is recorded here as context rather than as a statement about UK status.

No MHRA-licensed Selank product identified; what is sold online is unregulated research material

MHRA: the UK regulator that assesses whether a medicine is safe and works before it can be authorised for use here. Something not being MHRA-licensed does not automatically mean it is illegal, and it does not mean it is safe.

This is background information about UK regulation, not advice about what you can or should obtain.

Why this rating?

The A to D rating shown above comes from our earlier editorial review and is still waiting to be migrated into the structured review record below. That is a gap in our record-keeping, not a sign the rating is wrong.
